Indian Trail's history is quite similar to the history of many of the other towns and cities in and around Union County. As the town's name suggests, the area known today as Indian Trail was originally a trading route frequented by Native Americans during the 1600s and 1700s. The trading route connected the Waxhaw Indian settlement to Petersburg, Virginia. It was not until the mid 1700s that white settlers arrived in the area. Most of the white settlers who came to the area were Scotch-Irish and German settlers, and the first land grants were issued in the area in 1752.
In 1861, Indian Trail's first post office was established, but it would only serve the town for approximately five years before being discontinued. The post office would reopen in 1870 and stay in business until modern times, much like the commercial block established in 1912, which still stands today. Throughout the 1800s, Indian Trail would continue to develop and the railroad that was built in 1874 acted as a catalyst to the town's progress. Agriculture and farming played a big role in the development of Indian Trail and, in the latter 1800s, the town also became known for gold mining.
Schools, churches, and stores started to crop-up throughout the early 1900s and it would not be long before the town was incorporated. When Indian Trail was incorporated in 1907, its city limits were bound to an area extending one-half mile in radius from a point along the railroad tracks. Since then, the town has grown to a total area of over 15 square miles. Today, residents and visitors of Indian Trail can learn more about the town's history in the Corner Museum, which is located at the Indian Trail Town Hall.
Indian Trail has a few landmarks and attractions that are closely tied with the town's heritage. For example, the commercial block built by James Orr in 1912 still stands today. Another landmark in Indian Trail is the Indian Trail Presbyterian Church, which is a stone church built in 1916. Indian Trail School, one of the town's first schools, was established in 1923, though the school had been organized nearly 20 years prior to the construction of the school. Many of the other attractions and landmarks that Indian Trail residents and visitors can enjoy fall within Charlotte's city limits.
Indian Trail is well-known in the Carolinas for having some of the largest Fourth of July parades in North Carolina. With concerts, floats, cookouts, and countless activities, the parade is surely something that residents of Indian Trail should go to see. Aside from the annual parade, the town also has numerous other events, such as the town Christmas Tree Lighting event, the Fall Family Fun Day event, and the numerous civic organizations that help to bring the community together.
With such a welcoming community, a host of activities and amenities, and a prime location in the Charlotte metropolitan area, Indian Trail is a great choice for anyone. Currently, the town is looking to push forward and continue its development to become one of the best towns in North Carolina and one of Charlotte's most reputable suburbs.
